"The cars we drive say a lot about us."
Another notable suburb of north Austin which many pass by through the IH35 corridor without much thought is Georgetown, TX which was named for George Washington Glasscock. Mr. Glasscock donated the land for the new town which had good water and lumber. This attracted early settlers from the East and specifically of Swedish origins who were also drawn here because of the fertile and cheap land. Georgetown is the county seat of Williamson County, which was named after Robert McAlpin Williamson who was a judge at the time.
Georgetown was a farming community during the 19th and early 20th centuries. A cattle trail called The Shawnee Trail passed through Georgetown,Texas to the rail centers in Kansas and Missouri. Southwestern University helped bring higher education to the community when it opened its campus in 1873 and a new railroad in 1878 bolstered the town's growth and importance. A stable economy developed, based largely on agricultural activity with the main crop being cotton making it one of the top producers in Texas. In order to transport cattle and cotton, Georgetown was connected by two national railroads.
Lake Georgetown was built due to the flood of 1921 which killed 156 residents. The flood was due to a hurricane that settled over the area and brought 18 inches of rain. The extensive damage and loss of life prompted the building of a dam on the San Gabriel River in 1979 to create Lake Georgetown. This allows Georgetown and Round Rock access to the water rights for municipal water use.
The growth of nearby Austin helped Georgetown grow and in 2008, it was named the #2 best city to live and launch a new business by Fortune Small Business magazine.
